Psychology Services

Psychologists and psycho-educational consultants strive to build capacity in schools and work as agents of change to improve educational outcomes for students with special needs. These professionals are members of a multi-disciplinary team and may be asked by the school resource team to provide the following services:

  • Assist school personnel in the creation and functioning of resource teams that operate with a focus toward problem solving and use a strengths-based approach.

  • Conduct psycho-educational and social-emotional assessments to assist in the identification of a student’s educational needs as well to assist with the planning of appropriate school-based interventions.

  • Provide supportive interventions and counseling to students and their families in the context of the learning environment. The purpose of the intervention is to promote a student’s academic and social-emotional development. The type and duration of intervention will be determined by the resources available and needs of the situation.

  • Support and consult with school staff following a traumatic event, in accordance with school board policies and procedures.
  • Provide professional development to school staff and parents to promote a better understanding of typical and atypical childhood development in relation to learning, socialization, adaptive functioning and educational expectations.
  • Collaborate with other professionals or agencies in an effort to develop partnerships in the community to better facilitate planning and interventions for students. If necessary, referrals to other professionals and outside agencies may be made.
  • Provide supervision to graduate students in psychology training programs.
